Arete: What's yours?

Arete: What's yours?

April 20, 2021

The ancient Greeks had a word, ἀρετή (English: aretē). Directly translated, it means "virtue".

Nowadays, when freely translated it means to reach your greatest purpose or to achieve your full potential as a person.

I find ἀρετή to be a very powerful concept because it’s all about defining our own dreams and marking them as a centerpiece in our daily lives so that they permeate throughout all that we do. Ultimately, taking us one step closer to living our personalized version of a fulfilling life. (Funny...that sounds a lot like Financial Planning, doesn't it? 😄)

There's so much advertising, reality tv, and headlines shouting at us, telling us what success should look like, and showing off how others live their lives.

But ἀρετή is about reaching deep inside, finding that beautiful dream that aligns with your life priorities, and living it to the fullest.

It doesn’t have to mean fancy things or an expensive lifestyle unless of course, that's what you want.

There’s a lot going on in the world right now.

And probably even more going on in life... at work... in the family.

So sometimes, it's good practice to take a step back and ask yourself three big questions:

  1. What’s my purpose?
  2. What am I here to do?
  3. What does becoming the best version of myself mean?

For me,

  1. I'm committed in purpose to help as many folks achieve their deepest dreams as I can, it's the reason Kyros Wealth Management exists.
  2. I'm here to achieve my dream of getting a little better every day and helping those around me do the same.
  3. My ἀρετή is becoming the best Dad, Husband, Son, Brother, and Friend I can be and living up to it every single day.
